Football Awards Night Scheduled The 2008 Football Awards Night has been scheduled for Tuesday, December 16 in the multi-purpose room. The time will be announced later. Buchanan gets #1 playoff seed By virtue of their 8-2 season record (including wins over Bakersfield and Clovis West), their Co-TRAC championship, and a winning coin toss, Buchanan was awarded the top spot in the Central Section CIF Division I football playoff brackets. The Bears will face the number 8 team in the bracket, Clovis High, at 7:00 PM, Friday, November 21, and Buchanan High's Memorial Stadium. (view playoff bracket) Bears overwhelm Central Buchanan ended the regular season with a strong performance, beating Central 48-7. The Bears scored 26 points in the second quarter to overwhelm the Grizzlies, securing their second Co-TRAC Championship in a row, and insuring their best season finish since 2002. The Buchanan offense rolled to it's second game in a row with over 400 yards of total offense. Lance Orender and Taylor Genuser completed 18 of 24 passes for 230 yards. Stephen Johnson and Seth Moranda were their favorite targets, each hauling in 4 passes. The Bear running game rolled for 210 yards, led by Nigel Simmons (10 rushes for 96 yards) and Preston Argenbright (13 rushes for 95 yards). Defensively, James Willis snagged an interception, and Jarred Szot recovered a fumble. Szot and Brent Etiz each had 6 tackles for the game. (stats) The JV's prevailed in the opening contest, 24-7, finishing the season with a 10-1 record. The Frosh lost on Thursday night, 14-32, finishing with a 5-6 record. Clovis East upsets Buchanan The Timberwolves roared out of the starting gate Friday night, scoring three times in the first quarter. The Bears tightened down in the last three quarters, holding East to two more scores, and scoring three times to nearly even the score. With East ahead 35-28 late in the fourth quarter, the Bear defense forced a punt and took over with less than four minutes to play. Lance Orender, connecting twice to junior Kyle Novak, and twice to sophomore Seth Moranda, drove the team down to the four yard line. Faced with a fourth-and-goal, the Timberwolves managed to sack Orender and preserve the win. The Bears outgained the T'wolves 445 yards to 364. Orender completed 33 of 48 passes for 416 yards. Novak was a frequent target, hauling in 11 catches for 159 yards. Moranda caught 7 for 94 yards. (stats - photos) The JV team defeated Clovis East 21-13. (photos) The Frosh won on Thursday by a score of 15-6. Bears survive scare from Cougars There's a lot of football wisdom floating around about "ugly" wins. Most of it, however, centers around the the fact that they are wins. Buchanan came from behind to hand loss number 7 to the visiting Cougars Friday night. Clovis High, behind the tough scrambling of quarterback Ronald Staughter, scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter, taking their first lead of the game, 17-12. After a night of frustrating dropped passes, the Bears rallied behind the running of Alex Wood (127 yards on the night) and the steady passing of Lance Orender (14 of 20 for 182 yards) to score on a 25 yard touchdown pass to Seth Moranda preserve the win. (stats - photos) The JV team overwhelmed the Cougars 41-15 (photos) The Frosh lost on Thursday by a score of 8-28. Bears ground Eagles Buchanan beat number 1 ranked Clovis West Friday night by a score of 19-13. Behind a defense that bent, but didn't break much, the Bears kept the Eagles out of the end zone most of the night. Buchanan intercepted Clovis West twice, and stopped them on fourth-down plays four times to ice the win. Jarred Szot was the Bears' leading tackler with 12, followed closely by Brent Etiz with 11.5. Rafael Villalvazo snagged both Buchanan interceptions, including one of the first play of the game. Offensively, Buchanan eked out 227 yards against a stingy Eagle defense. Lance Orender completed 14 of 19 passes for 191 yards, including a game-breaking 88 yarder to Kyle Novak that led to a Bear touchdown that iced the victory. (stats - photos) The JV team beat CW, 28-2 (photos) The freshman lost on Thursday, 7-28.
